How to Set Up a Cursed Walking Server in 2026

The Cursed Walking turns Minecraft into a modern zombie apocalypse: cities, hordes, infection, guns, blood moons, and a custom progression loop built for tense multiplayer. This guide covers the clean server path.

What is The Cursed Walking?

The Cursed Walking - A Modern Zombie Apocalypse is a curated survival-horror modpack by OnMod. It focuses on exploration, progression, and advancement while the zombie threat keeps escalating around your group.

It is not a normal vanilla-plus pack with a few zombie mods sprinkled in. Cursed Walking includes hordes, mutant zombies, zombie variants, custom zombie creatures, infection, guns, cities, blood moons, modern armor, endgame weapons, and a custom dimension with structures and tougher loot routes.

That makes it a strong server pack when your group wants pressure. Instead of everyone quietly building separate bases, players naturally cooperate: scouting cities, defending a shared safehouse, rationing ammo, and deciding whether the next supply run is worth the risk.

Recommended Version

Run the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge branch unless you have a specific reason to play an older release. CurseForge lists the pack across 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, and 1.20.1, but the active 2026 updates are focused on the 1.20.1 version.

As of May 2026, the current main file is Cursed Walking V3.2.2 for 1.20.1 Forge. Use Java 17 for this branch, and make sure every player installs the exact same modpack version as the server.

Server Requirements & RAM Guide

Cursed Walking is more demanding than it looks because the pack leans on cities, custom mobs, hordes, and combat events. The official pack page recommends at least 4 GB for play and preferably 6 GB; servers with friends should start higher.

ScenarioRAMNotes
Small group6 GB2-4 players, low view distance
Recommended8 GBMost groups, smoother city exploration
Heavy server10+ GBLarge groups, high exploration, many active bases

Give the server fast CPU cores and SSD storage. Apocalypse packs feel awful when chunk generation stutters during a chase, so do not size this like a quiet vanilla server.

Option A: Quick Setup with ModReady

ModReady is the easiest route if you want the zombie-apocalypse part without the server-admin part. We handle Forge, Java 17, server files, backups, and the baseline settings.

  1. Open checkout and choose Standard+ for 8 GB RAM.
  2. Select Cursed Walking 1.20.1 from the modpack picker.
  3. Pick the region closest to your players.
  4. Complete checkout and use WELCOME20 for 20% off the first month.
  5. Share the server address and start with a small first session before inviting everyone.

That last step matters. Survival-horror servers are more fun when the rules are agreed up front: difficulty, voice chat, PvP, loot rules, and whether the group shares a safehouse.

Option B: Self-Hosting Your Server

If you want to host it yourself, use the official server files and keep the pack version exact.

Step 1: Install Java 17

Download Java 17 from Adoptium. Verify the version:

java -version # Should show: openjdk version "17.x.x"

Step 2: Download the Server Files

Go to the Cursed Walking CurseForge page, open the Files tab, and download the server files or additional server pack for your exact version. Do not upload the client pack to a blank Forge server and hope it behaves.

Step 3: Extract, Accept EULA, and Boot

  1. Create a clean folder such as cursed-walking-server.
  2. Extract the server pack into that folder.
  3. Run the included server start script once.
  4. Set eula=true in eula.txt.
  5. Start again and wait until the console says the server is done loading.

Step 4: Open Port 25565

If you are hosting from home, forward TCP port 25565 to the machine running the server. Our port forwarding guide covers the exact steps and the CGNAT problem that blocks many home hosts.

Server Settings That Matter

Start conservative. You can always raise limits later when the world has survived a few sessions.

view-distance=7 simulation-distance=5 max-players=10 online-mode=true difficulty=hard

The pack is designed around danger, so hard difficulty is part of the experience. If your group is new, lower player expectations before lowering every rule; the tension is the product.

Performance Tips for Cursed Walking

Do Not Push View Distance Too High

Cities and custom structures are expensive. A view distance of 7-8 is a better multiplayer starting point than 10-12.

Let Cities Generate Naturally

The pack page notes that cities are enabled by default now and manually enabling them is discouraged because it can cause chunk generation errors. Use the pack defaults unless you know exactly what you are changing.

Control Horde Events with Player Count

Ten players spread across different cities creates much more tick load than ten players in one base. Encourage grouped expeditions for smoother sessions.

Back Up Before Updates

This pack updates actively. Make a world backup before version changes, especially when the update touches custom dimensions, structures, or mob behavior.

Common Issues & Fixes

Players crash or cannot connect

Client and server versions are mismatched. Every player must install the same Cursed Walking version as the server, including the same Minecraft version and Forge branch.

Server crashes after manual mod uploads

Use the official server files. Client packs often include files that do not belong on a dedicated server, and removing the wrong thing creates harder-to-debug crashes.

OptiFine or shader mods cause client issues

The pack page specifically warns against adding OptiFine except for older branches. Use the pack's built-in shader and resource-pack support instead.

Lag spikes during exploration

Lower view distance, keep groups together, and check CPU tick time. Our Minecraft server lag guide has the profiling checklist.

Multiplayer Tips

Cursed Walking works best when the server has social rules. Decide whether PvP is allowed, whether bases can be raided, how loot is split, and whether players should share coordinates. The modpack creates pressure; your rules decide whether that pressure becomes fun tension or avoidable drama.

Start with a small group, run one evening as a shakedown, then invite more players once the safehouse, backups, and difficulty settings feel right.
