Fix "Failed to Verify Username" in Minecraft

Understanding why this authentication error happens and how to fix it - whether you're a player or server owner.

5 min readUpdated Jan 2026

What Does This Error Mean?

The "Failed to verify username" error occurs when a Minecraft server can't authenticate your account with Mojang/Microsoft's servers. This is a security feature that ensures only legitimate Minecraft account holders can join.

Common Scenario

If you're using a "cracked" or non-premium Minecraft launcher (like TLauncher), you'll see this error on servers with authentication enabled. This is intentional - the server is protecting itself from unauthorized players.

Are You a Player or Server Owner?

The solution depends on your role:

Solutions for Players

If You Have a Legitimate Minecraft Account

The error might be temporary. Try these fixes:

1. Restart Minecraft completely

Close the launcher entirely and reopen it. This refreshes your authentication token.

2. Log out and log back in

In the Minecraft Launcher, sign out of your Microsoft/Mojang account, then sign back in.

3. Check Mojang server status

Visit status.mojang.com to see if authentication servers are down. If they are, wait and try again later.

4. Check your internet connection

A weak or unstable connection can prevent authentication. Try restarting your router.

If You're Using a Cracked/Non-Premium Launcher

Servers with online-mode=true (the default) will always reject non-premium accounts. You have two options:

  1. Buy Minecraft - The legitimate solution. Minecraft Java Edition costs around $30 and gives you lifetime access.
  2. Find a cracked server - Some servers run with online-mode=false to allow non-premium players. Search for "cracked Minecraft servers".

Why Buy Minecraft?

Beyond ethics, premium accounts get access to most servers, official support, Realms, and your username is protected. Cracked accounts can have their names "stolen" on offline-mode servers since anyone can use any name.

Solutions for Server Owners

If players are reporting this error, you need to understand online-mode and decide how to configure your server.

What is Online-Mode?

The online-mode setting inserver.properties controls whether your server verifies players with Mojang:

online-mode=true (Default)

  • Only premium accounts can join
  • Usernames are verified and protected
  • Player data tied to UUID (persistent)
  • Better security overall

online-mode=false

  • Anyone can join with any name
  • Names can be impersonated
  • UUIDs are generated from names
  • Higher risk of griefing/hacking

How to Allow Cracked Players (If You Choose To)

Security Warning

Disabling online-mode significantly reduces your server's security. Anyone can join as any username, including impersonating admins. Only do this if you understand the risks and have other security measures in place (like AuthMe plugin).

If you still want to allow cracked players:

  1. Stop your server
  2. Edit server.properties - Find the line online-mode=true and change it to online-mode=false
  3. Start your server

Better Alternative: Use AuthMe

If you want to allow cracked players while maintaining some security, install the AuthMe plugin. It requires players to register and login with a password, preventing impersonation.

AuthMe Setup (Spigot/Paper servers)

  1. 1. Download AuthMe from SpigotMC
  2. 2. Place the .jar file in your plugins folder
  3. 3. Restart the server
  4. 4. Players will need to /register password password on first join
  5. 5. Then /login password on subsequent joins
