How to Set Up a Create Mod Server in 2026

Build factories, automate everything, and engineer ridiculous contraptions with friends. This guide covers every Create modpack, server requirements, and two ways to get running.

What is the Create Mod?

Create is a mechanical engineering mod that adds rotating power systems, conveyor belts, mechanical presses, trains, and hundreds of other contraptions to Minecraft. With over 75 million downloads across all versions, it's one of the most popular Minecraft mods ever made.

What makes Create special is how it handles automation. Instead of magic blocks that instantly process items, Create uses physically simulated machines with gears, shafts, and belts. You design actual factories where items travel along conveyor belts, get pressed, mixed, heated, and packaged — all visible and mechanical.

On a server, Create becomes even more impressive. Players can collaborate on massive factory builds, connect bases with functional train networks, and create automated supply chains that span the entire world. It's engineering Minecraft at its best.

Choosing Your Modpack

Create is available as a standalone mod and as part of several curated modpacks. Here are the most popular options for servers:

All in One Create (Forge)

The definitive Create experience. Includes Create plus carefully selected companion mods like Create Additions, Create Deco, and quality-of-life improvements. Available for both 1.19.2 and 1.20.1. Best for players who want a focused Create experience without the bloat of a kitchen-sink pack.

All of Create (Forge & Fabric)

A more comprehensive Create-centered pack with additional tech and exploration mods. Available on both Forge (1.19.2, 1.20.1) and Fabric (1.20.1). Choose this if you want Create as the core but with extra dimensions, biomes, and complementary mods.

Create: Above and Beyond

A quest-driven progression pack built entirely around Create. Players advance through multiple ages — from basic mechanical power to steam to advanced engineering. The best option for servers that want structured goals and a shared progression journey.

Create + ATM / Kitchen-Sink Packs

Create is included in most major kitchen-sink packs like ATM10. If you want Create alongside 400+ other mods, a pack like ATM10 gives you everything. Heavier on resources but offers the most variety. See our ATM10 setup guide for details.

Server Requirements & RAM Guide

Create servers are moderately resource-intensive. The mechanical simulations — especially trains, conveyor systems, and large contraptions — require good CPU performance. Here's what you need:

ModpackRAMPlayersNotes
Create standalone4-6 GB5-10Lightweight. Great performance.
All in One Create6 GB5-15Best balance of content and performance.
All of Create6-8 GB5-15More mods, slightly heavier.
Create: Above and Beyond6-8 GB5-10Quest-heavy. CPU matters more than RAM.
Large communities10+ GB15+Big factories with many moving parts need more resources.

Pro Tip

Create servers are more CPU-bound than RAM-bound. Large contraptions with hundreds of moving blocks stress the CPU, not memory. If your server runs fine at first but lags as players build bigger machines, the CPU is the bottleneck — not RAM. Check our RAM guide for more detail.

Java Version

Most Create packs on 1.20.1 need Java 17. Packs on 1.21.x need Java 21. Check your modpack's requirements — using the wrong version will crash on startup. Verify with java -version.

Option A: Quick Setup with ModReady

The fastest way to play Create with friends. No Java setup, no port forwarding, no JVM tuning. Your server is running in minutes.

  1. Pick your Create modpack from the ModReady checkout page
  2. Choose a plan based on the RAM table above (Starter works for small groups, Pro for larger communities)
  3. Name your server and complete checkout
  4. Share your server address with friends and start building

ModReady pre-configures the correct Java version, optimized JVM flags, and all mod dependencies. You also get automatic backups, DDoS protection, and a custom subdomain.

Option B: Self-Hosting Your Server

If you want to run a Create server on your own hardware, here's the step-by-step process.

Requirements

  • Java 17 (for 1.20.1 packs) or Java 21 (for 1.21.x packs)
  • At least 6 GB of available RAM (8+ GB recommended for larger packs)
  • A modern CPU — Create's mechanical simulations are CPU-intensive
  • SSD storage recommended for faster chunk loading
  • Access to your router for port forwarding

Step 1: Install Java

Download the correct Java version from Adoptium. For most Create packs on 1.20.1, you need Java 17. Verify:

java -version # Should show: openjdk version "17.x.x" or "21.x.x"

Step 2: Download the Server Pack

Download your chosen Create modpack's server files from CurseForge or Modrinth. Make sure you download the server pack, not the client pack.

Step 3: Extract and Configure

  1. Create a new folder for your server (e.g., create-server)
  2. Extract the server pack into this folder
  3. Run the install script once to generate config files
  4. Open server.properties and configure:
    • view-distance=10 (Create benefits from higher view distance for trains)
    • simulation-distance=6
    • max-players=15
    • online-mode=true

Step 4: Set JVM Flags and Start

Create a start script with these optimized flags:

java -Xmx6G -Xms6G -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:G1NewSizePercent=30 -XX:G1MaxNewSizePercent=40 -XX:G1HeapRegionSize=8M -jar server.jar nogui

Adjust -Xmx6G based on your pack and player count. Accept the EULA by editing eula.txt to eula=true, then start again.

Step 5: Open Port 25565

Forward port 25565 TCP on your router to your computer's local IP. See our port forwarding guide for step-by-step instructions.

Performance Tips for Create Servers

Create's mechanical simulations are unique — large contraptions with hundreds of moving blocks behave differently from typical Minecraft servers. Here's how to keep performance smooth:

Set Contraption Size Limits

Edit config/create-common.toml and set maxBlocksMoved to a reasonable number (default is 2048). On busy servers, lowering this to 1024 prevents single players from building lag machines. Adjust maxAssemblyBlocks similarly.

Optimize Train Networks

Trains are one of Create's best features but can cause lag with complex networks. Keep track designs simple, avoid excessive signal blocks, and limit active trains to what the server can handle. A good rule: start with 5-10 trains and add more as needed.

Use Spark for Profiling

Install Spark and run /spark profiler when you notice lag. Create's tick handlers will show up in the report, making it easy to identify which contraptions are causing problems. See our lag fix guide for more tips.

Pregenerate Your World

Create players love to build train lines across the map, which generates new chunks and causes lag. Use Chunky to pregenerate a large area (3000+ block radius) before players join.

Common Issues & Fixes

Contraptions not moving or breaking

Usually caused by exceeding maxBlocksMoved in the Create config. Check your config limits. Also verify the contraption has a valid power source — mechanical bearings, windmill bearings, and shafts all need rotational force.

Server crashes when assembling large structures

Assembling a very large contraption (1000+ blocks) can spike CPU usage and crash the server. Lower maxAssemblyBlocks in the config. If players need massive builds, break them into smaller independent contraptions connected by belts or trains.

TPS drops when many players are building

Create is CPU-intensive. Each active contraption ticks every server tick. Profile with Spark to identify the heaviest contraptions. Consider using simulation-distance=4 to reduce the number of active contraptions at any time.

Mod version conflicts

Create has many addon mods (Create Additions, Create Deco, Create Enchantment Industry). These must match the Create version exactly. Don't mix addons from different Minecraft versions. Stick to the modpack's included versions.

Multiplayer Tips

Tips for Create Multiplayer

  • Assign factory districts. Give each player or team a designated area for their builds. This prevents contraption overlap and makes it easier to track down lag sources.
  • Build a shared train network. Create's trains are the perfect multiplayer feature — connect everyone's bases with a central rail network. Plan routes before building to avoid conflicts.
  • Set up shared storage. Use Create's depot and smart chute systems to build community storage hubs where players can exchange resources.
  • Back up before big builds. Assembling a massive contraption can crash the server if something goes wrong. Back up before attempting ambitious builds.
  • Use the Ponder system. Create has built-in tutorials accessible with W while hovering over Create items in your inventory. Encourage new players to Ponder before asking questions.
